Big innings carry LCHS softball team to playoff win

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Lubbock Christian High had two big innings – each fueled by a two-run double from Avery Branson – and beat San Antonio Keystone School 20-11 Tuesday in a TAPPS Class 3A area-round softball game, moving the Lady Eagles within one victory of the state tournament.

LCHS (16-18) will face district rival Fort Worth Bethesda in a regional final Saturday at a time and place to be determined. The two teams split in the regular season. The winner advances to the state tournament next week in Waco.

Kalee Robinson went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and three runs scored, and Laura Callander went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs as LCHS rallied from a 7-4 deficit to eliminate Keystone (14-8), a state-tournament team last year.

The Lady Eagles committed four errors that led to six unearned runs in the first three innings. They played error-free the rest of the way and scored in bunches.

Branson’s first two-run double tied the game at 7. That came in the fourth inning, when LCHS went from down 7-4 to leading 11-7. Cobras pitcher Lauren Godinez walked five in the inning, including bases-loaded walks to Callander and Sydney Roberts. Summer Petrie also doubled home a run.

Branson’s other double came in an eight-run seventh.

Godinez and Cobras relief pitcher Shanna Wright walked eight and four batters, respectively. Wright led Keystone’s offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

LCHS pitcher Jenny Hall struck out eight.
