Sudan’s Steinbock heads to state in pole vault
By Travis Cram | AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
LEVELLAND – Sudan’s Brock Steinbock could think of only one thing as he began his routine before the boys pole vault Tuesday morning at the Region I-1A track and field meet at South Plains College Athletic Complex.
“Man it was cold out there,” he said with a laugh. “It was definitely different, but I guess it was OK for me.”
Maybe that just says how calm the Sudan senior was before making his leap of 14 feet, 6 inches to take the gold in the event and qualify for the Class 1A state championships in Austin for the second consecutive year.
And he had plenty of competition at the regional meet. Iraan’s Hewitt Holmes also qualified for state with a vault of 14 feet. Brock Carter of Sundown took third place with a 12-6 vault.
Crosbyton’s Meghan Bass stood out in the girls’ 3,200 meter, setting a new regional record with a time of 11 minutes, 41.45 seconds.
Sundown also qualified at least one competitor for state on Tuesday.
Francisco Hernandez finished second behind Jonathan Lira from Plains in the boys 3,200.
“It was pretty competitive out there this year,” Steinbock said. “I think we all kind of knew that 14 feet would be the number (Tuesday). That’s what I had at district and so I think everyone was kind of aiming for that.”
It means another top qualifier for Sudan this year after Brittany Williams’ standout performance in Austin in 2008.
She won the state title in the triple jump, an event she will compete in today along with two other running events.
She just missed qualifying for the long jump on Tuesday, placing fifth with her best jump of 16-23/4.
But for Steinbock, qualifying for this year’s state meet means getting a chance to compete healthy.
He competed in last year’s state meet with a broken foot and had to settle for eighth place.
He has higher expectations this time.
“That definitely sat in the back of my mind after we were done last year,” he said. “(Tuesday) everything felt great. No worries, that was probably the best thing about it.
“It didn’t hurt to get past my height from district either. I think if I can do the same thing and just concentrate well at state, who knows.”
