Monterey hires Meador, Mims as new coaches

BY ADAM ZUVANICH l AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Kent Meador is coming home – and for more than just a few days.

Steve Mims, meanwhile, gets to stay right where he is.

Meador, a Coronado graduate who played baseball at Texas Tech, was hired Wednesday as Monterey’s head baseball coach. He replaces Fred Oliver, who left to become the coach at Dallas Highland Park after 10 seasons with the Plainsmen.

The 44-year-old Meador, whose family lives in Lubbock, spent the last six seasons at Klein Collins, where he won three district championships and guided the Tigers to the Class 5A state tournament in 2007. He also has been a head coach at Spring Westfield and Tascosa, compiling an overall record of 271-170 in 15 seasons. He started his coaching career as an assistant to John Dudley at Coronado.

Mims, who has taught English at Monterey for the last four years, was hired Wednesday as Monterey’s head softball coach. He replaces Staci Jackson, who spent two seasons with the Lady Plainsmen before accepting an assistant-coaching job at Lewisville Hebron.

This will be Mims’ first coaching job in softball. He coached baseball at Lubbock High from 2003-05 and was previously the head coach at El Paso Franklin. He played baseball at Monterey for two years and also spent time in the Cincinnati Reds organization.

Always interesting to see people hiding behind their internet disguises and bad-mouthing others. Not very impressive or high in character.

Hope Mims has more success w/ Monterey softball than he did w/ LHS baseball.

So a CHS alum is coaching MHS, and an MHS alum is coaching CHS? What??

Its clear to see that Monterey Administration does not care about their Girls Softball Program. This will be the 4th Coach in 5 years. Coach Mimms has no Softball experience and if he did you failed to list it . There were more qualified canidates and you chose Coach Mimms. Actions speak louder then words. Is it because David Johnson admin at Monterey is brorther to JJ Johnson and would like for the Softball program to never compete with the other local schools. After all you hired Stacy Jackson previously from CHS and she only stayed two years. The Girls Programs at Monterey are of no importance to the administration at Monterey.

I bet Jimmy Webster’s butt just tightened up about two inches….
I’m gonna bet that this was the best move that Lubbock ISD could have made.
Kent Meador is a first class, stand-up human that will make the folks at Monterey happy.
Now hiring Minn’s for more than a janitor is a train wreck waiting to happen, he couldn’t coach his way out of a wet paper sack.
Good luck on that one Monterey, you’ll be looking for a new softball coach in two years MAX…..
Minn’s had great players his last two years at LHS but had his thumb in his butt, blamed his failure on the kids and assistant coaches, what a piece of work.

Hey taco-twister if your gonna talk crap about a person. At least get his freaking name correct. For heaven’s sake, its Mims not Minns. I guess you only have to have a 4th grade education to get in on these chats. Guess they don’t teach reading comprehension until 5th grade.

Those of you that think that coach Meador is going to have “kiss ups at his behind”. Obviously know nothing about the man. He coaches with integrity and with class, and never plays someone because of who their daddy is, or how involved their daddy is in the booster club, or any of that garbage. He plays the nine guys that are going to give the team the best chance fir sucess. I’ve watched him coach for 20 years now and he has turned around evry program he has ever layer his hands on, but more importantly he has made an impact on the life of evry kid he has coached or taught. If you have someone that is going to play for coach Meador I would be very thankful because he is one of the best coaches, and one of the best men ibhave ever met. Coach Meador is going to do amazing things at Monterey high school and I hope he has the support and backing of all the people on this website who have made it their duty to dog evry coach in town.
