Longhorns dominate 1A baseball honors

No baseball team on the South Plains had a more successful 2009 season than Lockney, which won the District 5-1A championship and fell just one step short of the UIL state tournament.

Just like they dominated most of their competition, the Longhorns also dominated the top honors on The Avalanche-Journal’s All-South Plains Class 1A Team.

Senior Lucas Hall earned Player of the Year honors as Lockney’s slugging first baseman, while ace right-hander Renee Cruz picked up the Pitcher of the Year award. Garrett Heard, who orchestrated the turnaround from Lockney’s 3-20-1 campaign in 2008, was named Coach of the Year.
