Lady Westerners beat Littlefield in opener
LITTLEFIELD – The Lubbock High volleyball team got off to a great start under new head coach Matthew Leesman.
The Lady Westerners opened their season Tuesday night with a 25-14, 28-26, 25-7 win over Littlefield, clinching the match in convincing fashion after holding on for a narrow victory in the second set.
Lubbock High (1-0) will next compete at the Monahans Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
• Frenship def. Cooper
WOLFFORTH – Maddie Johnson led Frenship with 11 kills, 14 digs and five service aces, and the Tigers roared back from an early deficit to beat Cooper, 23-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-18.
Kacey Deterding added nine kills for Frenship (2-0), while Kailey Moorhead chipped in 11 digs and a team-high six blocks. Carsey Aycock supplied 30 assists.
Ruby Johnson posted seven kills, eight digs and a block to lead Cooper (0-1), and Brittany Ruble added five kills and four blocks. Setters Katelyn Stewart and Brittney Bednarz combined for 29 assists.
Both teams will next compete in the Monahans Tournament beginning on Friday.
• Trinity Christian
Thanks to an all-around solid performance by Breeann David, Denver City spoiled Trinity Christian’s season opener, coming from behind to win 24-26, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-6.
Kasey Shaw tallied 17 kills to lead Trinity (0-1), while Kristin Fellows dished out 32 assists. Makenzie Brown and Christine Everett combined for 20 digs for the Lady Lions, and Shelbi McClure served for four aces.
Trinity returns to action on Friday at the Monahans Tournament.
• Coronado
Coronado’s Michelle Baucum recorded 17 kills and seven blocks in two matches, but the Lady Mustangs opened their season with home losses against Hereford and Monahans.
Hereford, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A, beat Coronado, 25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23. Monahans, the 10th-ranked team in Class 3A, won 26-24, 25-13, 25-17. Hereford and Monahans also played each other, with the Lady Whitefaces winning 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.
Kalani Giddens added 11 kills for Coronado (0-2), while Suzy Dimba recorded a team-high five blocks. Stepheny Wines supplied 35 assists for the day, and Kyleigh Lucia and Megan Granado each had two service aces while combining for 42 digs.
The Lady Mustangs travel to face Abilene and Abilene Cooper on Thursday, and they begin play at Abilene’s Bev Ball Classic on Friday.
