Cooper claims fourth place in Monahans
MONAHANS – The Cooper volleyball team took fourth place in the Monahans Tournament, winning its first match on Saturday before running into Midland and host Monahans.
The Lady Pirates (2-4) reached the semifinals thanks to a 25-23, 21-25, 25-17 win over Seminole, but lost their bid to play in the title match with a 25-15, 25-14 loss to Midland. Monahans then took third place with a 19-25, 25-16, 25-14 victory.
Brittany Ruble led Cooper on the day, combining for 26 kills, four blocks and three aces in the three matches. Ruby Johnson added 13 kills and three blocks, while Katelyn Stewart had nine kills, three blocks, an ace and 70 assists. Sarah Robinson had three kills and a block.
Cooper will return to action at 4 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts a dual match with Plainview and Lamesa.
• Trinity Christian
MONAHANS – Kasey Shaw racked up 45 kills in three matches, leading Trinity Christian to three victories and the silver bracket championship at the Monahans Tournament.
The Lady Lions swept Odessa Permian (25-20, 25-20) and Andrews (28-26, 25-18) to reach the bracket final against Alpine. After losing the first set, Trinity recovered for a 24-26, 28-26, 25-23 win.
Grace McGinnis added 24 kills for the Lady Lions (5-2), and Kristin Fellows dished out 55 assists. Makenzie Brown made 38 digs to lead the back-row defense, while Kailey Killough posted seven blocks at the net.
Trinity will next play at Amarillo San Jacinto at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
• Lubbock Christian
DENVER CITY – Bailey Scarborough dished out 30 assists in three matches, helping Lubbock Christian take second place at the Denver City Tournament.
The Lady Eagles began the day with a 27-25, 25-19 loss to host Denver City – which was declared the tournament champion with a 6-0 record in round-robin play – but LCHS rebounded with straight-set wins over Crane (25-21, 25-10) and Sterling City (25-17, 25-18). The Lady Eagles went 5-1 at the tournament.
Avery Branson made 24 digs for LCHS, and Brittany Hays led the attack with 25 kills. Hays and teammates KK Mack were named to the all-tournament team.
The Lady Eagles return to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with a home match against Amarillo Arbor Academy at the Rip Griffin Center.
• Coronado
ABILENE – Coronado’s early season struggles continued with a pair of losses at the Bev Ball Classic.
The Lady Mustangs dropped a 25-20, 25-20 decision to Abilene Wylie early in the day before losing to Boerne Champion, 25-14, 25-12.
In the two matches combined, Michelle Baucum led Coronado with 10 kills and four blocks. Tyler Webster added seven kills, 12 digs and four aces, while Megan Granado had 10 digs. Stephany Wines and Heather Choat combined for 25 assists.
Coronado (3-6) returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Randall at 7 p.m.
• Frenship
MONAHANS – Frenship’s Maddie Johnson tallied 21 kills and 10 digs in two matches, but the Tigers lost both of their gold-bracket matches at the Monahans Tournament.
Frenship lost to Odessa, 25-23, 25-18, in the quarterfinals before falling 25-18, 15-25, 25-21 against El Paso El Dorado.
Kacey Deterding added 18 kills for the Tigers (4-3), while setters Carsey Aycock and Kristina Gafford supplied 38 and 27 assists, respectively. Marisa Rodriguez and Maddie Salyer paced the back-row defense, combining for 32 digs.
The Tigers will next host Canyon at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
