Volleyball: Hays leads Lady Eagles to runner-up finish

CLOVIS, N.M. – Brittany Hays racked up 33 kills and 36 digs in two matches on Saturday, leading the Lubbock Christian High volleyball team to a second-place finish at the Clovis Invitational.
After rallying for a 22-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18, 18-16 win over Albuquerque (N.M.) Academy in the semifinals, the Lady Eagles lost to host Clovis, N.M., in the championship match, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23. Clovis got 14 kills from Antiesha Brown, who has orally committed to the Texas Tech women’s basketball team.
Lubbock Christian’s Bailey Scarborough dished out 40 assists for the day. In the win over Albuquerque Academy, in which the Lady Eagles rallied from a 15-6 deficit in the third set, Avery Branson made 24 digs and KK Mack added 14 kills and six service aces.
The Lady Eagles (9-3) return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brownfield.
• Estacado
WOLFFORTH – LaShondra Ray and Airel Wilson combined for 21 kills and 15 blocks in three matches, helping the Lady Mustangs win their last two matches at the Frenship Tournament and take third place in the bronze bracket.
Estacado began the day with 25-5, 25-15 loss to Lamesa before rebounding with wins over Brownfield (25-22, 11-25, 25-20) and Littlefield (25-15, 25-9).
Stephanie Sanchez paced Estacado’s defense with 11 digs for the day, while setters Nicole Cooks and Kaniesha Briley supplied 17 and 10 assists, respectively.
The Lady Matadors (6-10) travel to face Lamesa against at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
• Monterey
WOLFFORTH – The Lady Plainsmen went 2-1 on the final day of the Frenship Tournament, finishing third in the silver bracket.
Monterey came from behind to beat Shallowater, 19-25, 25-20, 25-11, in the bracket quarterfinals before falling to Pampa, 25-18, 25-19. The Lady Plainsmen rebounded with a 25-20, 25-20 win over El Paso Riverside in the third-place match.
Monterey returns to District 2-5A action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Amarillo.
• Lubbock High
EL PASO – Hannah Brooks tallied 13 kills and 12 digs to help the Lady Westerners split their final two matches at the Margaret Hussmann Tournament of Champions.
Lubbock High began the day with a 16-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-15 loss to Moriarty, N.M., before beating Alamogordo, N.M., 25-23, 25-18, 13-25, 25-20.
Katie Pattillo had 14 kills and nine service aces for the Lady Westerners (8-12), while Priyanka Shome added nine kills. Catherine Wiechmann posted eight kills and 24 assists, Azzeneth Marrufo chipped in 18 assists, and Marcie Kissko made 13 digs. Elizabeth Wu added 10 digs and five aces for Lubbock High, which all four of its tournament matches on Friday.
The Lady Westerners resume District 2-5A play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, hosting Coronado.
• Trinity Christian
SEMINOLE – Kasey Shaw tallied 17 kills in two matches, but the Lady Lions lost twice in the gold bracket of the Seminole Tournament.
Trinity Christian began the day with a 25-17, 25-11 loss to Monahans, ranked fifth in Class 3A, and then fell to El Paso Montwood, 25-15, 26-24.
Grace McGinnis added seven kills for the Lady Lions (6-9), while setters Kristin Fellows and Shelbi McClure combined for 19 assists. Makenzie Brown made 19 digs to pace the back-row defense, and Logann Lamb chipped in six digs.
Trinity will next host Shallowater at 7 p.m. Monday.
• Frenship
WOLFFORTH – Carsey Aycock distributed 41 assists in two matches, but the Tigers lost twice on the final day of their host tournament.
Frenship lost to Abilene Wylie, 25-18, 10-25, 25-22, in the gold bracket quarterfinals and then dropped a 25-16, 25-19 decision to District 4-4A rival Plainview.
Kailey Moorhead led the Tigers’ attack with 14 kills, and Darbie Walker made 19 digs defensively.
Frenship (7-10) travels to face Canyon at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
• Coronado
COPPELL – Coronado’s Kyleigh Lucia made 26 digs in two matches, but the Lady Mustangs lost twice to conclude play at the Jenny Eckert Memorial Tournament.
Coronado fell to host Coppell (25-14, 25-14) and Dumas (25-23, 19-25, 25-21).
Tyler Webster posted 10 kills, 22 digs, two blocks and a service ace for the Lady Mustangs (7-14), while Michelle Baucum added 12 kills and two blocks. Setters Heather Choat and Stephany Wines each dished out 19 assists, and Wines also had four aces.
Coronado returns to District 2-5A action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lubbock High.
• Cooper
WOLFFORTH – Brittany Ruble had 12 kills and three blocks in two matches at the Frenship Tournament, but the Lady Pirates lost both of them.
Cooper lost 25-8, 25-7 in a gold-bracket quarterfinal against Randall, the top-ranked team in Class 4A, and then fell to El Paso Americas, 27-25, 16-25, 26-24.
All-tournament selection Katelyn Stewart finished the day with 32 assists, three kills and six digs for the Lady Pirates, while Brittney Bednarz added three kills and 11 digs. Hannah Limmer led Cooper with 15 digs and two aces, while Bednarz, Ruble and Stewart each tallied one ace.
The Lady Pirates (9-9) will next host Denver City at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
