Frenship strikes early, often, cruises to easy win over Dumas

Frenship battled nerves early last week.
Not this week.

The Tigers defeated Dumas 41-13 Friday night at Tiger Stadium in Wolfforth.
The Tiger defense forced two turnovers on the first two Dumas plays and the Tigers scored on its first four offensive possessions to jump to an early lead.
“We came out and started on fire defensively and offensively,” said Frenship head coach Brad Davis. “The experience of playing the first game (helped). The jitters weren’t there in this second game. We wanted to focus on turnovers and not putting the ball on the ground and we certainly did a good job of executing that.”
Frenship’s ran the ball well with 238 yards on the ground.
Tiger starting running back Bobby Huey rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. He did not play the second half because Frenship coaches said they wanted to conserve Huey.
“We came out here and wanted to do better than we did last week,” said Huey. “We weren’t ready to play last week, but Coach Davis told us we needed to always do our best. We came out here and got it done.”
Frenship, 2-0, rushed for 55 yards on the game’s opening drive to cap a 6-play drive and make the score 7-0.
Frenship’s defense forced a fumble on the first Dumas offensive play.
Dumas quarterback Clayton Baker completed a 35-yard pass to Dillon Johnson before the Tigers recovered his fumble on the Tiger 43-yard line.
Seven plays later Frenship quarterback Brandon Hanslik completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Zach Kittley.
Dumas lost the ball on its second drive as running back Rockne Burt fumbled and Frenship’s Bo Cates recovered on the Demon 32-yard line.
Josh Vasquez ran a 26-yard reverse to set the Tigers up for its third touchdown of the quarter. Huey scored off a 1-yard run up the middle to give Frenship a 21-0 lead with 5:06 remaining in the first quarter.
The Tigers forced Dumas to punt on three straight possessions and scored two more touchdowns during the second quarter to take a 35-0 lead into the half.
Frenship used its second-string offense and defensive players during the second half of the game.
“You have to have depth in football because you never know when you are going to need a back-up,” said Davis. “It is good experience for us to be able to get a whole half of football for those guys and will pay off down the road.”
Frenship defensive coordinator Don Black said the defense was effective because they stuck to the game plan they worked on all week.
“We knew we had to keep the ball out of Aaron Thomas’ hands,” said Black. “We doubled up on him when he was at the receiver position and put pressure on him when he played quarterback.”
Thomas was held to 18 yards rushing and 42 yards passing.
Dumas, 0-2, scored in the third and fourth quarters.
“The boys came out and they fought hard,” said Dumas head coach Mike Burt. “That is something we wanted to figure out. (We wanted to know) If our boys had the heart and courage to come back out against one of the top teams in the state and present a challenge in some state, form or fashion. I thought our boys did a great job of responding.”
