Shallowater’s efficient attack overwhelms Chieftains

CROSBYTON – As the sun set on Chieftain Stadium on Friday, so did Crosbyton’s hopes of starting 2-0 this season.

The Shallowater Mustangs came on strong with a relentless aerial attack, shutting out the Chiefs, 47-0.
Shallowater senior quarterback Logan Powell threw for 131 yards and four touchdowns on 12-of-13 passing, and he also rushed for a score. Connecting with fellow senior Desmond Wright, the duo frustrated the Chiefs’ defensive backs with a series of short passes that turned into big gains, with five passes resulting in two touchdowns and a total of 68 yards.
“I wasn’t throwing that good and the receivers made the big plays,” Powell said of his performance. “We came out on top, and that’s what’s supposed to happen.”
The Mustangs (2-0) scored 33 points in the first half, with three touchdowns in the second quarter including back-to-back scores on passes from Powell to Wright and a 15-yard touchdown pass to Cade Blackwell.
Mustang coach Kyle Maxfield said his team played cohesively, but would have to work hard to be ready for next week’s game against Levelland in Shallowater.
“I thought we executed pretty well, ” Maxfield said. “Crosbyton’s a class act. They do things right. We just wore them down.”
The Chiefs (1-1) made their biggest offensive gains of the night in the last half. Junior quarterback Michael Medina competed nine of 25 passes for 91 yards with one interception. Shannon Medina led the Chiefs in rushing with 37 yards on nine carries and 22 yards receiving.
Crosbyton threw off the Mustang defense with a reverse fade pass from Shannon Medina to quarterback Michael Medina for a gain of 7 yards and the Chiefs’ initial first down of the night in the second quarter.
Michael Medina’s lone interception came in the middle of the third quarter as the Chiefs advanced to the Mustangs’ 19-yard line. Medina’s pass, intended for Shannon Medina, was intercepted by Mustang defensive back Jacob Shannon at the 10-yard line and returned all the way to the end zone for Shallowater’s final touchdown of the night.
The longest drive for the Chiefs was just over 50 yards in the fourth quarter, ending with a sack by the Mustang defense deep in Shallowater territory.
“We kept playing and we kept going at them, and they’re an extremely good ballclub,” Crosbyton head coach Brannon Rodgers said. “All the things that went wrong tonight had more to do with us executing than what they did.”
Still, Rodgers praised the Mustangs.
To get his team back on track, Rodgers said the Chiefs would get back to basics next week, working on fundamentals before their next home game against Smyer.

HIGH SCHOOLS/Mustangs quarterback tosses four TD passes
This District is about like playing in the Big 12 South! Whoever survives the gauntlet will win it. Don’t berate anyone for playing lesser non-district teams. What would you have to gain by playing tough non-district schedules? Unlike D-1 college ball, there is a playoff system to determine final rankings. It would be ridiculous to play power house teams in non-district and get your team all banged up prior to district. Sure Littlefield and Idalou deserve to be talked about based upon their track record, but watch out, Post and Roosevelt have good ball teams, and I promise you Shallowater is waaaaaay under rated! They can strike from anywhere–anytime, and will hit you in the mouth. If key skill players stay healthy, don’t be surprised to see this club playing deep in to the fall!!!

True but playing better teams in pre district shows you where you are at and where you need to improve. Playing teams that are so weak that it’s over by half time gives you a false reality of where your team stands and doesn’t show where you need improvement.
