Coronado captures another district title in tennis
AMARILLO — The players and opponents have changed over the years, and so has the head coach.
But the Coronado tennis team keeps winning district championships.
The eighth-ranked Mustangs held off No. 7 San Angelo Central 10-7 on Saturday in the District 2-5A final at Austin Tennis Center, capturing their 12th consecutive league title.
“It’s unbelievable,” said Coronado head coach David Denham, who has guided the team to its last five district titles. “It gets harder and harder every year. Central is a very, very good team. They battle us every time we play them.”
Central handed Coronado (23-3) its only loss during the district’s nine-match round robin, but the Mustangs — who reached the final by cruising to 10-0 wins over Amarillo and Odessa Permian on Friday — returned the favor when it mattered most. It was largely because of some improved performances by a handful of Coronado players.
Ian McDonald, Alex Siegel, Nadia Tello and Coronado’s mixed doubles team of J.B. Moss and Emily Alderson had previously lost against the Bobcats. They all won Saturday, though, with McDonald’s victory at the fifth boys singles position clinching the win.
McDonald narrowly beat Hayden Turner to the punch — she had match point at No. 6 girls singles —and Jackson Schmidt’s boys singles match was about to go to a decisive third set.
“It was a complete team effort,” Denham said. “That’s what team tennis is about. You have a kid lose a match, and another one picks them up.”
Central won all three boys doubles matches, but Coronado had the edge in every other event. The Mustangs won four of six boys singles matches — with Ben Jordan and Chris Moss winning in straight sets — while Tello, Siegel and Whitney Wofford won straight-set matches in girls singles.
Coronado’s girls doubles tandems of Wofford and Mary Alice Blacketer, and Siegel and Karly Garland, also won in straight sets.
Next up for Coronado is the Region I-5A Tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday in Abilene. The field will include six of the teams ranked in top 10 in the latest Texas Tennis Coaches Association poll.
The Mustangs last won a regional championship in 2003, when they also won their only state title in team tennis.
Glad to see H. S. tennis on the front page!
