Coronado has field day at District 2-5A cross country championship
Donovan Torres won his third straight District 2-5A championship on Thursday, and he wasn’t the only Coronado cross country runner who had a good time on a cold and wet afternoon at Mae Simmons Park.
Maddie Kauffman gave Coronado a sweep of the individual district titles, and both of Coronado’s teams finished among the top three to qualify for the Region I-5A meet on Nov. 7. And the Lady Mustangs gave the school its first team district championship in at least a decade, according to head coach Tim Torres.
“Both groups have really worked hard to achieve this,” Torres said. “I’m just really proud of them.”

The Monterey girls also qualified for the regional meet, finishing third as a team, as did two runners from Lubbock High. Isaac Placencia placed second in the boys race, and Daniella Romo finished sixth in the girls competition.
Kauffman, a sophomore who won her first district crown, was one of four Lady Mustangs who placed among the top 10. McKenzie Archer finished 18 seconds behind Kauffman in second place, while Krystal Robles and Brooke Lindstrom took eighth and 10th place, respectively.
Donovan Torres was the only top-10 finisher for the Coronado boys, which narrowly advanced to the regional meet. The Mustangs and San Angelo Central tied for third place with 111 points, and Coronado won the tiebreaker because its sixth runner, Cameron Lugo, finished six places ahead of the Bobcats’ sixth runner.
“It just goes to show you how important your sixth runner is,” Tim Torres said. “That gave us the berth to regionals.”
Donovan Torres continued his 2-5A dominance, winning the meet for the third time in as many tries. The junior posted a time of 15 minutes, 16.04 seconds on the 3-mile course, beating the rest of the field by nearly 38 seconds and besting his winning time from last year by more than 20 seconds.
Tim Torres said his star pupil “really performed well” in the muddy conditions, so it should be a good springboard into the next race. Donovan Torres will be one of the favorites at the regional competition, which also will be held at Mae Simmons Park, after finishing fourth last year.
“Next week is going to be very tough,” Tim Torres said. “We have four of the top runners in the state coming in next week, but I think he’s ready for the challenge.”

Frenship qualified both of its cross country teams for next week’s Region I-4A meet, which was a pleasant surprise to head coach Rodney Hendrix.
He said he expected the Frenship girls to win their third straight District 4-4A championship on Thursday at Mae Simmons Park – which they did in convincing fashion – but Hendrix didn’t anticipate nearly as good of a performance by the boys squad. The Tigers went above and beyond, though, placing second behind San Angelo Lake View.
“We were not expecting the boys to get second,” Hendrix said. “That was a total surprise. It was a great surprise.”
Shawn Spicer led Frenship with a fourth-place individual finish, while Andre Quinton and Michael Aguilar also placed among the top 10.
The Frenship girls had five runners in the top nine en route to a 36-point victory over Plain-view. McKenna Chancellor placed third individually for Frenship, while Micah Valdez, Ashlee Delacruz and Malori Maddox took each of the next three spots. McKenzie Burns finished ninth.
“It was just a good team effort,” Hendrix said. “Our depth was fantastic this year.”
Both of Plainview’s squads also punched their ticket to the regional meet by placing among the top three. Prince Dawkins and Chris Salinas finished among the top 10 for the Plainview boys, while Daisy Guerrero and Janie Macias took second and eighth place, respectively, for the Lady Bulldogs.

Both of Cooper’s teams finished fifth at Thursday’s District 1-3A meet, while Estacado’s teams took sixth place.
