Lady Pirates advance in volleyball playoffs

SWEETWATER – Ruby Johnson and Brittany Ruble were forces at the net and on the back row, leading Cooper into the second round of the volleyball playoffs for the fourth year in a row.

Johnson and Ruble combined for 26 kills, 21 digs and 10 blocks in Tuesday’s Class 3A bi-district match against Graham, which the Lady Pirates won 25-18, 28-30, 25-20, 25-22. Cooper (23-13) will next face Clint (28-4) in the area round at 6 p.m. Friday in Monahans.

“It feels good,” Cooper coach Courtney Pesterfield said. “We knew if we played well, we would be all right.”

Kaitlyn Vinson added eight kills and two blocks for the Lady Pirates, who also got 40 assists, seven digs and two service aces from freshman setter Katelyn Stewart.

• Frenship

CANYON – Dumas continued its dominance against Frenship, winning 25-18, 25-14, 25-12 in a Class 4A bi-district match at Canyon High School.

Frenship coach Jennifer McCully, whose Tigers were hoping to win at least one playoff match for the fourth consecutive season, said her young team was “really tight” against the tradition-rich Demonettes, who also beat the Tigers during the regular season. Frenship has only two seniors, Carsey Aycock and Kailey Moorhead.

“I feel like the pressure of the playoff game really got to us,” said McCully, who credited Dumas (25-15) for its ball control and mistake-free play. “We never really relaxed and just played volleyball.”

Moorhead led the Tigers (19-16) with five kills, five blocks and 10 digs, while Kacey Deterding and Maddie Johnson also had five kills. Aycock dished out 16 assists.

• Olton

VERNON – Jamie Chitty had 14 kills to lead a balanced Olton attack, and the Fillies won the first playoff match in the three-year history of the program.

Olton beat Knox City 25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 25-23 in the Class 1A bi-district playoff. The Fillies (14-15) will next face Windthorst (24-12), the District 7-1A champion, in the area round at a time, date and site to be determined.

“It’s really exciting seeing a bunch of kids with that much enthusiasm after a match, and understanding what it means to win a bi-district game,” Olton coach Diane Ivy said. “The majority of these kids had never won a playoff game, much less been in one.”

Ivy’s daughter, Brennan, had seven kills and a team-high 22 digs, while Kristen White added nine kills and eight blocks. Kailey Jones (18), Lea Falcon (15) and Mikala Whitaker (12) also had double-digit digs for the Fillies.

• Shallowater

SEMINOLE – Brittney Scaff posted 13 kills, two blocks and three service aces, leading Shallowater to its first playoff win since 2006.

Shayna Conner and Marissa Westbrook had eight kills apiece in the Fillies’ 25-22, 27-25, 25-15 win over Kermit, with Conner also making 11 digs and Westbrook adding three blocks. Taylor Wilson supplied 27 assists and two aces for Shallowater (20-17), which advances to face Tulia, the District 2-2A champion, in the area round.

• Plainview

CANYON – The defending state champion was too much for Plainview, which lost 25-13, 25-19, 25-9 in a Class 4A bi-district match against 10th-ranked Hereford.

Emily Welch had seven kills, nine assists, five blocks and five digs to lead the Lady Bulldogs (27-16), while Abby King and Kacy Richburg each added four kills and four digs. Richburg also had five blocks, as did JoVanna Gomez.

Brittany Ramirez and Ashley Welch paced Plainview’s defense with 12 and 11 digs, respectively, and each served for an ace. Emily Welch, Amanda Hinojosa and Meredith Mull also had aces for the Lady Bulldogs.
