Football scenarios, dental surgery painful
When you see her on the street, walk up to Dr. Gladys Whitten and shake her hand.
The one person who can close my often big mouth has been found.

Watson
Thanks to Dr. Whitten, as you read this I’m sitting in my easy chair with a jaw that probably looks like I’m smuggling marbles across the border after having gone a few rounds with Mike Tyson. Such is the case when your 41-year-old wisdom teeth are extracted, and knowing mine they probably had to get out the chainsaw.
I’ve been dreading this experience for the past few weeks, even more than figuring out playoff scenarios for high school football going into the final week of the regular season. Either case, my head hurts. At least for the wisdom teeth thing they give you painkillers.
Anyway, being out of commission the middle of this week forced me to look at these scenarios a bit, but I wasn’t able to do my normal calls to get tiebreakers, so I’m probably going to miss on a lot of this. Luckily, a good portion of it is cut and dried, so here we go. We’ll leave out 2-5A since no area teams qualified.
• District 4-4A
In: Abilene Cooper (No. 1 seed, Division II); Big Spring (Division II); Hereford (Division II).
Win and in: Winner between Frenship and San Angelo Lake View is in and is the No. 2 seed in Division I.
Left to decide: The winner between Big Spring and Hereford will be the No. 1 seed in Division II, the loser will be the No. 2 seed.
• District 1-3A
In: Borger (No. 1 seed, Division II); Estacado (Division I).
Win and in: Dalhart and Perryton, both 2-2, meet for the No. 2 seed in Division II.
Left to decide: Estacado can claim a share of the 1-3A title with a win at Borger while Borger can earn it outright with a win.
• District 2-3A
In: None.
Win and in: Graham (3-1), Abilene Wylie (3-1), Brownwood (3-1), Snyder (2-2).
Left to decide: This could get complicated with three teams (Graham, Abilene Wyile and Brownwood) at 3-1 and Snyder at 2-2. Brownwood is in with a win over Snyder, and vice versa for the Tigers as long as Graham and Abilene Wylie both win, which they should. Wylie will go Division I. If Brownwood wins it would be the No. 1 seed in Division II and Graham would be No. 2 by virtue of the Lions’ win over the Steers. If Snyder wins, the Tigers would be the No. 2 seed in Division II and Graham would be No. 1. The fun part would be looking at the tiebreaker if Snyder wins and Graham and/or Wylie lose.
• District 3-3A
In: Monahans (Division I).
Win and in: Midland Greenwood (3-1); Seminole (2-2).
Need help: Andrews (2-2); Lamesa (1-3).
Left to decide: Midland Greenwood (3-1), Seminole (2-2), Andrews (2-2) and Lamesa are all still alive for the two seeds from Division II. Seminole can clinch with a win over Lamesa and either a Greenwood win or Andrews win. Greenwood clinches with a win, but Andrews needs a win and a Seminole loss. Lamesa needs a win over Seminole and an Andrews loss to force a three-way tie.
• District 2-2A
In: Muleshoe (Division I); Friona (No. 1, Division II).
Win and in: Floydada (2-2).
Need help: Childress (1-3); Dimmitt (1-3).
Left to decide: Third place. Muleshoe and Friona will meet Friday for the outright district title. Floydada gets the No. 2 seed in Division II with a win over Dimmitt. Childress will earn a forfeit win over Tulia, while Dimmitt must beat Floydada to force a three-way tie.
• District 3-2A
In: Littlefield (Division I); Post (No. 1, Division II); Idalou (No. 2, Division II).
Left to decide: The district championship Friday night when Post (5-1) visits Littlefield (6-0).
• District 5-1A
In: Springlake-Earth (No. 1, Division II).
Win and in: Sudan (3-1); Farwell (2-2).
Need help: Smyer (2-2).
Left to decide: If Sudan beats Smyer, the Hornets will be the Division I representative. Farwell, which will pick up a forfeit win over Anton to improve to 3-2, would then be the No. 2 seed in Division II. A Smyer win over Sudan creates a three-way tie with Farwell for two berths.
• District 6-1A
In: New Deal (No. 1, Division II); Olton (Division I).
Win and in: Hale Center (2-2); Lockney (2-2).
Left to decide: Third place and the No. 2 seed in Division II will be decided by the winner of the Lockney-Hale Center game.
• District 7-1A
In: Seagraves (4-0).
Win and in: Plains (3-1); Stanton (3-1).
Need help: Sundown (2-2).
Left to decide: Plains and Stanton will take the last two spots with wins over Seagraves and Sundown, respectively. Sundown needs a win over Stanton, and would best be served by a Plains win to avoid a three-way tie for the two remaining berths.
• District 3-IA six-man
In: Petersburg (No. 1 seed).
Win and in: Winner between Whitharral (2-1) and Kress (2-1) will be the No. 2 seed.
• District 4-IA six-man
In: Meadow (No. 1 seed).
Win and in: Ropes (2-1).
Need help: Wellman-Union (1-2); Lorenzo (1-2).
Left to decide: A Lorenzo win over Ropes and a Wellman-Union win creates a three-way tie for the second playoff berth.
• District 2-IIA six-man
In: None.
Win and in: None.
Left to decide: Amherst (3-1) is done and must wait to see how Silverton (2-1) and Motley County (2-1) do. Wins by those two creates a three-way tie for two playoff berths. A loss by either and Amherst and the other team are in. If both Silverton and Motley County lose then it creates a three-way tie with Lazbuddie (1-2).
• District 7-IIA six-man
In: Dawson (No. 1 seed).
Win and in: The winner between Klondike (2-1) and Loop (2-1) will be the No. 2 seed.
See, that wasn’t so painful, was it?
Yeah, right.
The Picks
• Amarillo at Lubbock High (today): I would love to be able to write that Lubbock High ended its 33-year losing streak to Amarillo. I just don’t think it’s going to be this year. Amarillo 34, Lubbock High 13.
• Monterey at Coronado: Here we are the final week of the regular season and I’m still not sure I have a grasp on any of the Lubbock ISD 5A teams. In this case, go with the hot hand. Monterey 31, Coronado 21.
• Frenship at San Angelo Lake View: San Angelo has been a tough place a few times for the Tigers. But those were better Lake View teams. Frenship’s defense will get the job done. Frenship 27, Lake View 7.
• Estacado at Borger: The last time the Matadors went on the road to the Panhandle they came back with a loss. But that was a different Estacado team, that owe’s Borger some payback. Estacado 26, Borger 14.
• Cooper at Levelland: For all the injuries and setbacks the Pirates have had to go through, with such high expectations, at least they’ll get to end on a good note. Cooper 31, Levelland 12.
• Denver City at Roosevelt: There will be no miracle run in the postseason for the Eagles this time, but that doesn’t mean the year was a failure. This district was tough from top to bottom. Roosevelt 41, Denver City 34.
Last week: 4-3
Season: 50-18 (.735)

George,
I just finished reading your column about possible playoff scenarios for football. In district 3-3A you have Monahans listed as being in and being the Division 1 representative. Monahans is not the largets school in that district and is not the largest school with a chance to make the playoffs. Both Seminole and Andrews have a larger enrollment. For several weeks now the AJ has listed Monahans as having an enrollment of 862. Their enrollment, according to the UIL website and also Dave Campbell is 562 not 862 as reported by the AJ. I agree that Monahans is in but they will be the top Division 2 representative. I called Courtney Linehan’s number earlier this week to try and get this corrected but evidently it has not been changed. I believe your numbers are wrong. As a life-long loyal Monahans fan and AJ reader for 30 years now I believe this needs to be fixed as it upsets the possible playoff scenarios. Thanks.
