ACUFF – Sarah Lain scored 16 points and Jasmine Brainard added 11 as Roosevelt opened the year with a 53-38 win over New Deal Tuesday night.

Kacie Whitley and Shehala Burt added seven points each in the win for the Lady Eagles (1-0).

Eboni Hood paced New Deal (0-1) with 12 points.

Nicole Hampton poured in 17 points and Canyon went into Coronado’s gym and won in a season opener pitting state-ranked teams.

Casey Land and Jordan Vessels scored 12 points apiece for Canyon, which starts the year ranked No. 5 in Class 4A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Devin Griffin delivered 19 points for Coronado, which opened at No. 15 in Class 5A.

Canyon jumped to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter and made Coronado play catch-up the whole way.

The Lady Mustangs got 12 points from Suzzy Dimba.

Texas Tech commitment Haley Schneider led all scorers with 18 points for the Lady Plainsmen (0-1), who trailed 24-15 at halftime.

Raelan Wright and Kirstie Edwards added eight and seven points, respectively, for Cooper, which broke open a close game with an 18-1 run in the second quarter.

Mindy Duran led Lubbock High with six points. Hollie Gurrola and Cassy Portwood were next with four each.

Traca Bradstreet and Shelby Kager had 13 points each to lead Randall while Jade Cordova chipped in 10.

Jenny Hall scored nine for LCHS, followed by Sydney Roberts with six.
