Region I-2A Semifinal No. 8 Denver City vs. No. 3 Nocona
• When: 8 p.m. today
• Where: Moody Coliseum, Abilene
• Records: Denver City 31-6, Nocona 36-3
• How they got here: Denver City won District 3-2A to earn a first-round bye, beat Dimmitt in area round, beat Bushland in regional quarterfinals; Nocona won District 5-2A and had a first-round bye, beat Colorado in area round, beat Paradise in regional quarterfinals.
• About the match: The winner will face either Alpine or Peaster in the regional final at noon Saturday. Denver City is back in the regional tournament for the first time since 2006, and two more wins will put the Fillies in the UIL state tournament for the first time since 2004. Nocona, which last reached the state tourney in 2000, is making its third consecutive appearance in the regional tournament. Each of the last two years the Lady Indians were eliminated by eventual state-champion Bushland, which Denver City beat on Tuesday. The Fillies are led by Breeann David and Shahala Hawkins, who double as setters and middle blockers, while Nocona’s top hitters are Zowie O’Neal and Blair Dingler. The teams faced each other at the Graham tournament earlier this season, splitting a pair of pool-play games.
