Fillies beat Nocona, on verge of state berth

ABILENE — Breeann David and Shahala Hawkins continued their offensive dominance Friday night, and the Denver City volleyball team continued its march toward the UIL state tournament.

David and Hawkins combined for 38 kills and 32 assists, leading the sixth-ranked Fillies to a 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 28-26 win over No. 3 Nocona in a Region I-2A semfiinal at Moody Coliseum. Denver City (32-6) will face Peaster (35-4) at noon today in the regional final, and a win would put the Fillies in the state tourney for the first time since 2004.

“We’ve prepared for this all year, and we’ve believed we can get there,” Denver City head coach Megan David said. “We’ll see what they do (today). Peaster’s a good team, and we’re just looking forward to playing them.”

Breeann David posted 25 kills and 14 assists, while Hawkins added 13 kills and 18 assists. Alexis Summers paced the Fillies’ defense with 20 digs, and Destiny Rosemond served for two aces.

“We did a great job passing the ball tonight, and we put up some big blocks,” Megan David said. “They had to change their hitting a little bit and maybe were a little off-balance.”

Denver City last reached the regional final in 2006, when it lost to Bushland. Nocona (36-4) was eliminated by Bushland in each of the last two regional tournaments.
