A trio of Mules earned second-team honors on the Associated Press Class 2A All-State team for 2009.

Junior offensive lineman Sergio Montejano, senior defensive back Adrian Muniz and senior punter Jared Skipworth were honored with second-team selections. Montejano anchored an offensive line that led the way for an offense that averaged 460 yards per game. He finished with 80 pancake blocks and graded at 93 percent for the year.

Muniz was part of a stellar defensive unit that allowed just 307 yards per game. He had 40 tackles, three interceptions, three fumble recoveries, caused two fumbles and broke up 10 passes.

Skipworth, who also played quarterback for the Mules, averaged 42 yards per punt on 27 kicks.

Several area players earned honorable mention. Receiving those honors were defensive lineman Taylor Guinn, linebacker Brent Turner and defensive back Jacob Johnson from Idalou, defensive lineman Will McDowell and receiver Zach White from Littlefield, linebacker Noe Saenz from Friona and defensive lineman Cooper Washington and linebacker Juan Sanchez from Muleshoe.

Bushland quarterback Sawyer Cornelius, who has the Falcons in the Class 2A Division II state championship game on Saturday, was named the Offensive Player of the Year. Leonard defensive lineman Tevin Daniels was named Defensive Player of the Year.
