Mustangs repeat as 2-5A swimming and diving champs
A year ago, Coronado boys swimming and diving snapped Lubbock High’s string of 16 consecutive district championships.
On Monday, the Mustangs started a streak of their own.

Lubbock High's Christine Kobza swims her leg of the girls' 200-yard medley relay. The Lubbock High girls won the event and won the team district championship.
Coronado captured its second consecutive District 2-5A crown at the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center, winning much more convincingly than it did in 2009. The Mustangs racked up 171 points to beat second-place San Angelo Central by 61, a year after edging the Westerners by 12 points.
“It’s time for the Mustang dynasty,” said Shawn Grace, one of only three senior swimmers for Coronado.
The Mustangs got individual victories from Grace, Jason Hallier and Drew Tarver, with all three winning their first 2-5A championships. Tarver, a junior, set a district record with a time of 22.88 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle.
Coronado also excelled in the three relays, winning two and finishing second in the other. In 12 total events, including the 1-meter diving competition, the Mustangs had 16 top-three finishes.
“Eleven boys that work their fannies off every single day,” Lubbock ISU swimming coach Trey Hayes said of the reason for Coronado’s success. “Everyone on that team works hard, and it shows.”

Lubbock High's Madisyn Cox stretches for the wall as she makes a turn during the girls' 200-yard individual medley during Monday's District 2-5A swimming and diving meet at the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center. The freshman won the event with a time of 2:09.83, setting a district record.
Lubbock High won the girls team title, earning a measure of redemption in the process. The Lady Westerners’ streak of five consecutive district championships was snapped by Monterey last year, but they returned to the top on Monday.
Lubbock High finished with 130 points, 33 more than second-place Central.
“I’m just excited to get that title back,” Lubbock High freshman Madisyn Cox said. “I didn’t want Monterey to get it again.”
Cox led the way for the Lady Westerners, setting district records in both the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. She also was part of Lubbock High’s 200 medley relay that set a new 2-5A mark and got the team off to a fast start.
“Coach always says the 200 medley is the starter of the meet,” said Lubbock High junior Cara Kasemsri, who swam the first leg of the relay. “We won that, so we were just on a roll.”
So were Coronado’s Victoria Palombit and Monterey’s Lainey Parham, who matched Cox with two record-setting wins apiece.
Palombit, a junior who had yet to win a 2-5A title, blistered the field in both sprint events. She won the 50 freestyle by more than 1 1/2 seconds and the 100 freestyle by nearly three seconds.
“It was crazy,” Palombit said of setting a pair of 2-5A records. “I worked really hard this year, and it was really cool to win finally.”
Parham, also a junior, repeated as district champion in the 500 freestyle and won her third consecutive league crown in the 200 freestyle. She broke her own 2-5A records in each event.
Parham also kept pace with her older sister, Calley, who last year became the first swimmer from Lubbock ISD to win four district titles in the same event. Lainey will have a chance to match that feat as a senior next year.
“I’ve got to keep the tradition going,” she said.
Coronado diver Audrey Ruiz and Lubbock High swimmers Cody Farmer and Nicholas Tidwell also won district titles on Monday, and by finishing among the top six in their events, several other swimmers and divers from Lubbock qualified for the Region I meet on Feb. 12-13 at the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center.
In the District 3-4A meet held simultaneously on Monday, Estacado diver Ben Jackson won his second consecutive league title and the Matadors’ only swimmer, Chris Rodriguez, finished second in both of his events. Seminole got victories from Hannah Hicks in the girls 100 breaststroke and Ricky Gillespie in the boys 50 freestyle.
