Monterey upsets Midland in double OT

Aaron Garza hit a jump shot with 30 seconds left in double overtime to lift host Monterey past Midland, 74-73, in District 2-5A play on Friday night.

The Plainsmen (12-17, 5-10 in district) squandered a four-point lead with less than two seconds left in the first overtime but won a defensive battle in the second. Garza’s basket was the only field goal for either team in the second overtime period.

Chris McCurley scored a team-high 16 points for Monterey, including 12-of-17 from the free-throw line. Philip Armendarez tallied 14 points.
Antwan Goodley racked up a game-high 36 points on 10 field goals and 15 free throws to pace Midland (15-12, 10-5). Mercedes Lane chipped in 15.

Down eight points at the half, Coronado rallied Friday night and stole a road win against Odessa Permian, 88-75.

The Mustangs got a big boost from Quay Johnson, who had just five points at halftime but finished with 41 for the game. Four Mustangs scored in double digits: Tim Johnson had 10 points, Tanner Hester scored 12 and Thomas Johnson finished with 18.

Jerry Joseph led Coronado with 25 points.

Parker Wentz went 13 of 14 from the free-throw line and scored a game-high 23 points, leading Trinity Christian to a TAPPS District 1-4A win at home against Fort Worth Christian.

Dave Miller and Tanner Gregory added 16 and 13 points, respectively, for the Lions (31-5, 8-1), and each made a trio of 3-point goals.
Trinity got many of its points from the foul line, making 31 of 38 attempts.

Tyler Graves scored 18 points to lead Fort Worth Christian, while Hunter Watson added 15.

Odessa was led by Joed Amoyaw’s 17 points and Dalen Brooks’ 12.
