Monterey moves into second-place tie with win over Coronado

Andres Flores tallied a goal and an assist for the Monterey boys soccer team, which continued its climb up the District 2-5A standings on Monday with a 2-0 victory against Coronado at Lowrey Field.

The Plainsmen (8-2-2, 5-2-2 in district), who are halfway through their 2-5A schedule, vaulted into a second-place tie with Midland.

“I feel real confident,” said Monterey head coach Donny Matticks, whose team started 5-4 in last year’s district race and eventually missed the playoffs. “Now we’ve seen everybody, and we kind of know what to expect. We plan on being in the hunt.”

Flores assisted on the first goal of the match, scored by Eric Carrasco in the 19th minute. Flores added an insurance goal midway through the second half, using an assist by Brandon Batto.

Monterey goalkeeper Isaac Wilkins recorded his seventh shutout of the season and sixth in district play, stopping Coronado’s only shot on goal.

“Defensively, I couldn’t ask for any better,” said Matticks, whose Plainsmen travel to face Odessa Permian at noon Saturday.

Goalie Bobby Diaz made 10 saves for the Mustangs (0-13, 0-9), who continued to struggle offensively. Coronado has scored only three goals this season, and it’s been shut out in all but one of its district matches.

“We just can’t find the net,” said Coronado head coach Oscar Castillo, whose team will try to rebound at noon Saturday at Midland Lee.
