A late interception thrown into the hands of Lubbock Christian High safety Michael Sanders put an exclamation mark on an outstanding performance by the senior.

Sanders compiled 400 yards of offense — 266 through the air and 134 on the ground — to lead the new-look Eagles to a 27-18 victory against Smyer on Friday night at Lena Stephens Field.

In the first game under new head coach Aaron Stone, Sanders was part of all but 14 of the Eagles’ offensive yards.

“I’ve got to give credit to my (offensive) line because it all starts with them,” Sanders said. “We’ve been working on the inside hole a lot and running powers, counter traps and just making me run with the ball.”

The Eagles’ offensive line didn’t allow a single sack, something that pleased Stone. Sanders had plenty of time to find the open receiver when in the pocket, and even made throws on the run showing his playmaking ability often throughout the game.

Sanders had touchdown passes of 73 and 61 yards in the first half, with one of them going to wide receiver Taylor Hoffman. The senior receiver also scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 8 yards, with the first one out of the wildcat formation.

Both offenses looked jittery, compiling more 20 penalties between the both of them and stalling several drives.

Toward the end of the first half, trailing 21-18, the Bobcats had a drive foiled by their own miscues, committing three penalties that pushed them from a first-and-goal at the 3-yard line to an eventual second-and-goal from the 20.

“We’re primarily a running team and 10-yard holding penalties and chop-block penalties — 15-yard penalties – those are drive killers for us because we run predominantly,” Smyer coach Rick Price said.

Jaekob Blewett ran for 171 yards for the Bobcats, and Brandon Cavazos added 124 for a formidable one-two punch.

Price said he can attribute some of the penalties to opening-game jitters, but he expects his team to improve. Despite the numerous penalties given to his offensive line, the Bobcats’ I-formation produced 357 yards on the ground and three scores.

But Stone’s defense made some halftime adjustments to limit the Bobcats to three first downs in the second half.

Next up for the Eagles is a trip to Seymour next week. Their first-year coach already seems confident, as he addressed the crowd after the game.

“They have a nice new field there, and we’re going to ruin it for them,” Stone said to a cheering Eagles fan base.

PLAINVIEW — The Estacado Matadors opened their season with a 48-13 road win Friday night, returning from Plainview 1-0.

Senior quarterback Deverick Stubblefield led the way, scoring three of the Mat’s seven touchdowns. He opened the game with a 6-yard run in the first quarter, then followed it with a 58-yard touchdown pass to Dale Willard to make it 13-0 Estacado.

“Estacado’s returning a lot of kids from a playoff team and we’re a team that’s rebuilding,” Plainview coach Marcos Hinojos said. ‘We faced a team that’s got a great deal of speed, and they were ready for us. We just weren’t able to match the speed that they bring.”

Estacado put up eight more points when defensive lineman Leroy Mitchell forced a Plainview fumble and Brent Mann recovered and brought it back 20 yards for the score. Stubblefield converted with a pass to Riheem Hunter in the endzone.

“Their execution is a lot farther along than ours is at this point,” Hinojos said. “They just did what they do.”

The Mats led 34-0 after the first half, but that’s when Plainview got on the board. Receiver-turned-quarterback Thomas Curry found Chris Salazar for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Estacado scored twice more in the fourth quarter, but Curry and Salazar connected again for Plainview’s final push, a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Estacado is on the road again next week, when they face Pampa. Plainview will host Andrews.

“We’re going to go back to work; that’s what we do,” Hinojos said. “Every Friday night Plainview’s got a chance, so we’re just going to go back to work and do what we have to do.”

CLARENDON — Corie Ramirez scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 63-yard interception return in the third quarter, and seventh-ranked New Deal held off Clarendon 23-21 in an evenly matched season opener.

Ramirez’s interception was one of the three turnovers forced by the Lions’ defense, which allowed 21 first downs and 275 yards to a Clarendon offense led by quarterback Johnny Gaines.

“Huge,” New Deal coach Ron Mayo said of Ramirez’s play. “I don’t know if we’d beat them if that didn’t happen.”

Hector Castro, who rushed for 96 yards on 20 carries, helped seal the win with a 40-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Isaac Chavez-Ward also scored a rushing TD for New Deal and passed for 131 yards.

Ricardo Nunez put the Lions on the board with a first-quarter field goal.

“I’m happy for the win,” Mayo said. “They’re a great team. The beauty of this game is it showed us some holes and things we need to work on and things we were good at.”

Gaines accounted for most of the Broncos’ offense, rushing for 175 yards and all three of their touchdowns. He also threw for 80 yards.

“The little Gaines kid is a phenomenal athlete,” Mayo said, “probably one of the best ones I’ve ever faced.”

WOLFFORTH — Coronado gained some ground on Abilene Wylie on Saturday, but not enough to win.

The Lady Mustangs, who were swept by Wylie on Friday and during the first week of the volleyball season, faced the Lady Bulldogs for a third time in the championship match of the Frenship Tournament. Coronado won the opening set but couldn’t keep it up in a 20-25, 25-17, 25-15 loss to the state’s fifth-ranked team in Class 3A.

“We just went out and played in game one, just went out and played hard and had fun,” Coronado coach Chad Jones said. “All of a sudden we saw we were in a position to beat them, and the kids started playing tight and were afraid to make mistakes. And the wheels fell off.”

Coronado (17-10) reached the championship match with a 25-16, 25-15 win against Cooper and a 25-12, 25-14 victory against host Frenship in the semifinals.

Sophomore Kalani Giddens, who was named the tournament’s outstanding hitter, led Coronado’s attack with 15 kills for the day. Stephanie Johns added 14 kills, 10 blocks and three service aces, Zoe Washington had 13 kills and four aces, and all-tournament selection Lizzy Dimba chipped in 12 kills and six blocks.

Heather Choat dished out 61 assists for the Lady Mustangs, and Megan Granado made 50 digs and served for three aces.

Coronado returns to Wolfforth at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for another match against Frenship.

■ Trinity Christian

PLAINVIEW — Kristin Fellows and Grace McGinnis were named to the all-tournament team as Trinity Christian took third place at the Coca-Cola Classic at Wayland Baptist University.

The Lady Lions lost in the third-place game to Plainview 25-14, 25-23. The loss followed three consecutive victories. TCHS defeated the Lubbock Titans 25-22, 25-13, followed by a win against Plainview Christian 25-16, 25-20. In their third match, the Lady Lions defeated El Paso Jesus Chapel 25-12, 25-4.

Fellows finished with a team-high 25 kills and 10 aces. Bri Moss added 22 digs and 10 more aces. Linsey Wall tallied 42 assists, and Kailey Killough chipped in eight blocks. Meredith Henson contributed 18 kills.

TCHS (11-9) will return to the court at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Shallowater.

■ Estacado

PECOS — Nicole Cooks dished out 47 assists in three matches, leading Estacado to an undefeated final day at the Cantaloupe Classic.

The Lady Matadors, who won consolation, beat Fort Davis (25-15, 25-19), Dell City (27-25, 25-18) and Odessa Permian (22-25, 25-14, 27-25). The win against Dell City avenged a loss from Friday, when Estacado beat Marfa and also lost to Alpine.

Deirdre Foree led the Lady Matadors’ attack on Saturday, posting 24 kills.

Estacado will next host Olton at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

■ Monterey

WOLFFORTH — Kristyn Wilson had four kills and five digs, but Monterey lost 25-21, 25-20 to Sweetwater in the Silver Bracket consolation final of the Frenship Tournament.

Monterey advanced to the consolation final by beating El Paso Socorro, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23 with Karolyne McMillian’s 12 kills fueling the Lady Plainsmen.

Earlier Saturday, Dalhart beat Monterey, 25-20, 25-11 in a Silver Bracket first-round match. Melissa Caskey led the Lady Plainsmen in that one with 10 digs, seven assists and two kills.

Next for Monterey is a non-district road match against Midland Lee at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

■ Cooper

WOLFFORTH — The Cooper volleyball team made it all the way to the Gold Bracket consolation game of the Frenship tournament this weekend, where they forced a third set before losing to Bushland 25-23, 26-28, 25-12 on Saturday.

Cooper lost 25-16, 25-15 to Coronado in the morning, then went on to defeat El Paso Burges 25-18, 28-30, 25-20.

Cooper is now 13-10 overall. The Lady Pirates travel to Denver City on Tuesday.

■ LCHS

CLOVIS, N.M. — Lubbock Christian High’s KK Mack logged 18 kills, but the team dropped both its matches Saturday to finish fourth in the 16-team Clovis Invitational.

Avery Branson had 13 digs in the loss to Academy. Against Denver City, LCHS got 10 digs from Mack, six kills and four aces from Jenny Hall and eight digs from Scarborough.
