MIDLAND — Quentin Johnson saved the day for Estacado on Saturday.

With one out in the top of the seventh inning and runners on first and second, Monahans’ Ozzie Lujan hit a grounder up the first-base line that squibbed through senior first baseman A.T. Rivera’s legs.

The freshman right fielder rushed to pick up the ball and threw a dart to get Alex Burrell out at home to keep the lead. The next batter, Quincy Titus, struck out to end the game, completing Estacado’s 3-2 victory and a two-game sweep of Monahans in the Class 3A Region I quarterfinal playoff at Citibank Ballpark.

“I just wanted to get an out so we could win,” Johnson said. “I thought it was going to be a little wild, but I got it there.”

Johnson also had a chance to gun down somebody at home in the third inning, but his throw went up the line, allowing Ricky Robledo to tie the score at 2-2.

Matadors coach Hector Limon called a double steal with runners on first and third in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mario Quesada stole second base and Nick Flores took off on a delayed steal for home. There was confusion for Monahans (15-9) and no tag was made on either runner as Flores crossed home for the go-ahead run.

One-run games seem to be the norm for the Matadors (29-8), which is fine with Limon.

“We can handle a one-run game forever. It’s something that we’re comfortable with,” he said. “It’s something that we preach and we’re definitely not afraid to be involved in.

“That’s the type of game you want to be involved in when you go neck-and-neck.”

Mick Limon got the start for Estacado and gave up two runs with one walk and five strikeouts.

Junior Garza went 1 for 2 with a two-RBI double and was hit by a pitch.

Estacado is set to play West in the Region I-4A semifinal next week, but times and dates are to be determined.

ABILENE — It’s been a merry month of May for Monterey, and now the somewhat improbable postseason for the Plainsmen will continue into at least the fourth round of the Class 5A playoffs — as forecast by the new coach — after Saturday’s dramatic win.

Kent Meador’s team scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to overcome the Burleson Elks and take a 7-6 victory into the Region I-5A semifinals.

“That was intense,” senior catcher Tyler Pearson, who scored the tying run, said after the two-game regional quarterfinal sweep. “I don’t even know that words can describe that.”

After a walk and a strikeout, six straight batters reached base in the seventh against the Elks’ ace closer Sabo Murray (5-1) before Jordan Vestal’s sacrifice fly to right sent courtesy runner Justin Crimmons home from third with the winning run.

“We were getting on each other in the dugout before the inning started,” Pearson said. “We were just trying to get some energy going. He (Murray) walked a few, and that gave us some momentum.”

It also gives the Plainsmen a season record of 26-15-1 before their next series, a best-of-three against Flower Mound Marcus. The teams will play at Hardin-Simmons’ Hunter Field with the times and dates to be determined.

Burleson, the third-ranked team in Texas Class 5A in the latest poll, ended its season at 30-8.

Monterey is playing .800 baseball for the month of May (8-2) after entering the month with 18 wins in 31 games (.581) as the fourth place team in District 2-5A.

“The teams now are all the same,” Pearson said. “Numbers and rankings don’t mean anything. We have to get after it.”

Shortstop Jon Finney walked to start the seventh, and Elks coach Chris McKinley replaced middle reliever Jordan Mitchell with Murray. He fanned Chris Pacheco for the first out, but then came consecutive singles from Turner Mattson, Ryan Reagor, Pearson and Troy Nicholson and bases-loaded walks to David Gates and pinch-hitter Tanner Frost before Vestal’s sacrifice fly.

Reagor scored the fifth run on Gates’ walk, and Pearson tied it on Frost’s base-on-balls after Finney and Mattson scored earlier.

Vestal’s medium-deep fly ball drifted into foul territory, and Burleson outfielder Eric Gonzales elected to catch it for the second out. But his throw home was late and up the line toward third base and failed to catch the head-first-sliding Crimmons.

“He’s our top closer,” McKinley, who played at Coronado in the 1990s while Meador was assistant coach, said of Murray. “He’s been in that situation before. We were going to live or die with him. Today we weren’t as fortunate.

“All we needed was a ground ball for a double play,” he added. “But instead we got ground balls that bounced through for base hits on this hard West Texas dirt.”

Meador’s team scored single runs in the first and sixth to trail 6-2 entering its half of the seventh.

“We just preached quality at-bats,” he said of the final inning. “We were a little surprised with their closer. We had heard he threw in the 90s (miles per hour), but we didn’t see that today.”

Nicholson, a senior who pitched the complete-game victory for Monterey, had an RBI single in the first to score Reagor. In the sixth, Reagor walked and scored on Gates’ RBI single.

Burleson grabbed its lead with a five-run third. The Elks had RBI hits from Dalton DeLeon and Dennis Montes, but the other three Burleson runs came across on two Plainsmen errors.

Monterey won Saturday afternoon despite committing four errors, giving them seven this weekend and a total of 19 in their eight playoff games.

AUSTIN – When Mike Leach was negotiating a contract extension earlier this year, and his future at Texas Tech seemed uncertain, one of the names bounced around as a possible replacement was former Red Raider assistant Art Briles.

But Briles, preparing for his second season at Baylor after a successful stint at the University of Houston, said his focus was and has always been on helping the Bears improve.

“I am honored to be at Baylor,” Briles said to gathered media at the Texas High School Coaches Association annual convention. “I consider it a privilege to coach at Baylor University. That’s where all my energy and my passion and my goals lie.

“I think we closed the gap a bunch last year and had some great opportunities that we didn’t finish out. So we’ve got to finish what we started. The natural progression is to be a bowl-bound team and that will always be one of our goals, but we have higher aspirations than that.”

Aside from Texas and Oklahoma, the Bears gave the Red Raiders maybe their toughest test of the season in Lubbock, putting a scare into the Jones AT&T Stadium crowd before Tech rallied for a 35-28 victory in the 2008 regular-season finale.

This year, the teams wind up the season against each other again, only this time it will be at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. The Bears and Raiders will shift their annual meeting to the Cotton Bowl in 2010.

“There are a lot of benefits from the recruiting world and the exposure world with playing in Dallas,” Briles said. “But that’s our last game of the year, and there will be a lot of water under the bridge between now and then. Really, all our focus right now is on fall camp and getting ready for (the season opener against) Wake Forest.”

QB or WR?

Mike Sherman has a bit of a dilemma.

Going into the 2009 season, Jerrod Johnson is listed at the top of the depth chart at quarterback for Texas A&M, but it’s not cut and dried. Sherman said Tuesday the ideal situation would be to have former Big Spring standout Ryan Tannehill competing with Johnson at the start of fall practice, but Tannehill proved his worth as a receiver for the Aggies a year ago.

Tannehill, however, missed spring practice with a torn labrum in his shoulder and didn’t get a chance to compete at quarterback. And Sherman is reluctant to use Tannehill at receiver, though he’s listed atop the depth chart at one receiver spot, and risk injury if he’s going to be the backup quarterback, which was a key position for A&M in 2008.

“When we moved Tannehill from quarterback to receiver 10 days into camp last year, he asked if he could still have a chance to play quarterback,” Sherman said. “Going into preseason I’m still going to give him a chance to play quarterback, and approximately 10 days into camp we’ll make a decision as to who the starter is.

“Regardless, we don’t have another No. 2 other than Ryan or Jerrod. If (Tannehill) plays receiver we don’t have the luxury of having him be an every-down receiver for us and also being a dependable backup quarterback. It would be very difficult to put him in that risk situation as far as injury is concerned and still expect him to be a No. 2 quarterback.”

Winning like Wayne

It’s not often that the majority of sports on a college campus take their cues from the baseball program. Then again, Rice is not a normal college campus.

Third-year Owls head coach David Baliff has no qualms about showing his team the example set by the Rice baseball team and venerable head coach Wayne Graham when it comes to building a top-flight, championship-caliber program.

“The expectations on our football team at the university are high,” Baliff said. “But we’ve got to continue to work to make Rice football like Rice baseball. Wayne Graham has made just such a consistent winner and that’s the way we need to be at Rice. We’ve won our first bowl game, now we need to have two winning seasons in a row. Wayne shows us you can do it if you work hard, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Baliff said, though, that the football team is already reaping some benefits from baseball’s success, other than the fact that starting quarterback candidate Ryan Lewis, a transfer from Louisiana, played for Rice’s baseball team this past spring.

“It seems like every time the baseball team goes to a regional we get a (football) commitment,” Baliff joked.

Noteworthy

Frenship receiver Lance Ratliff and Snyder defensive back Kenneth Turner were listed atop the North team depth chart as of Tuesday morning, likely making them starters for the game Tuesday night. Ratliff was also listed as the No. 2 kicker behind Keller Fossil Ridge’s Chris Boswell. Idalou’s Sean Reagan was listed at second-string defensive end behind Midland Greenwood’s Blake McColloch, while Muleshoe quarterback Wes Wood was listed behind Plano signal caller Carson Meager. … Texas Tech’s two incoming freshmen on the North squad also are listed as starters, Lewisville Hebron offensive tackle Joel Gray and Denton Ryan cornerback Yahshua Williams. … The Sept. 3 game between Tascosa and Monterey at Lowrey Field has been tabbed by Fox Sports Southwest as the DQ Big Game of the Week, the only time it will happen on the South Plains this year. The FSSW crew will be in the Panhandle on Oct. 29 when Dumas visits Palo Duro.

Kat Johnson might go down as one of the best pitchers to play softball on the South Plains.

The Levelland senior went into the record books with the second-highest career strikeout total for high school softball in the state of Texas (1,557) and will soon be playing collegiately for Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

So it was an easy choice to select Johnson as The Avalanche-Journal’s All South Plains Class 3A-2A-1A-TAPPS Pitcher of the Year.

“She’s just a great kid,” Levelland head coach Jesse Casarez said. “She’ll be a hard one to replace.”

And while someone will step in next year for the Lady Lobos as the No. 1 pitcher, it’s likely that no one will ever replace what she did for four years.

Johnson was 99-28-3 at Levelland, finishing with a 0.66 career ERA while batters hit a measly .089 against her. She finished with 25 one-hitters, 72 shutouts and 23 no-hitters – three of which were perfect games.

Her 1,557 strikeouts rank second behind current University of Texas pitcher Kayla Barnhill.

Estacado coach Christy Kegans, the Coach of the Year, knew what it was like to face Johnson. Her Lady Matadors made a charge to make the playoffs this past season for the first time in school history, coming one win shy of doing so after winning four District 1-3A games – the most district wins in school history for the softball program.

Joining Johnson and Kegans is Player of the Year D’Maris Murillo from Slaton. A pitcher as well, she also provided offensive power for the Tigerettes, hitting .569 with 21 RBIs.

AUSTIN – Considering the short amount of time for practice and preparation, the Texas High School Coaches Association all-star football game oftentimes comes down to talent and the ability to jell quickly.

In the 75th edition of the clash Tuesday night at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, that edge swung decisively in favor of the South, leaving the South Plains representatives on the North squad frustrated.

The South scored in almost every way imaginable – breaking a couple of records with fumble and kickoff returns for touchdowns in the process – crushing the North early for a 48-21 win.

“It just seemed like we couldn’t get anything going,” said Idalou defensive end Sean Reagan, who finished with three tackles, one for a loss. “They were getting all the breaks and hitting all the big plays on offense, and I guess on defense, too. We just couldn’t get anything going.”

The South scored on its first drive of the game and never looked back. The North, meanwhile, struggled offensively, not getting a first down until a completion by Muleshoe quarterback Wes Wood early in the second quarter. The North finished with just 21 yards total offense in the first half and 276 for the game, thanks mostly to two late touchdown drives, the final one coming with 1:16 remaining when Wood hit Cisco’s Josh Wood from 4 yards out.

Frenship receiver Lance Ratliff snagged two passes for 51 yards on the final North drive, and Snyder defensive back Kenneth Turner had two tackles. Texas Tech signee Yahshua Williams from Denton Ryan finished with three tackles and broke up one pass.

“It was really frustrating,” said Wes Wood, who finished as the North’s top player, completing 8 of 17 passes for 114 yards and the touchdown. “It was hard to put together a passing offense for the receivers and quarterbacks to be on the same page. If our linemen had it good, the quarterbacks would mess up or the receivers would run the wrong routes. It’s hard with a new offense and lot of people being used to the spread stuff.”

The South didn’t have that problem and was led by a couple players who were teammates Tuesday but become rivals today.

Running back Chris Whaley, a University of Texas signee, was named the game’s Offensive Most Valuable Player with 14 carries for 52 yards and three touchdowns. Defensive back Dustin Harris, though, stole the show. The Texas A&M signee returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown and added a 95-yard fumble return for a touchdown to earn Defensive MVP honors.

The kickoff return broke the 46-year-old record of 94 yards and came after the North scored its first touchdown on a 30-yard LaMarcus Howard blocked punt return for a touchdown, while the fumble return eclipsed the 93-yard effort of Jason Tucker from Waco Robinson in 1994.

Harris also completed a 37-yard pass on a lateral, intercepted a pass and had a 63-yard punt return wiped out by a penalty.

“Today was a fun day,” Harris said. “It was fun to get an opportunity to carry out our high school dreams, but now we’re in college. This was a good opportunity to show our stuff, but now we’ve got to go right back and get into two-a-days.”

From the beginning it was evident the South had the more talented team, and it proved as much for the entirety of the first half.

The South dominated on both sides of the ball, racking up 256 yards of total offense through the first two periods while holding the North to just 21. That led to a 27-0 halftime lead for the South that would have been worse if not for a missed field goal, a punt-return touchdown wiped out by a penalty and one bad drive.

Whaley scored on runs of 1 and 3 yards in the first half, while Joe Jones caught a 63-yard scoring pass and Chris McAllister added a 7-yarder with 1:07 left in the first half.

The North got the early momentum by stopping the South’s first drive of the second half and chasing Darrell Cantu-Harkless out of the pocket on fourth down. Cantu-Harkless rolled left and tried to kick, but Howard blocked it, picked it up along the sidelines and carried it into the end zone to cut the North lead to 27-7.

But Harris quickly erased all North hopes by taking the following kickoff at the 2, breaking a couple of tackles up the middle and out-racing kicker Chris Boswell down the sideline for the score, effectively icing the game.

“When we got that fumble return we were all pumped up,” Reagan said. “And then they returned the kickoff, and that’s just hard to deal with. They get it right back and (the fumble return) is not even a difference.”
